This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the public service as one of three Administrative Clerks within the Working for the EPWP Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate, based at the Head Office in Johannesburg. The role is essential to keeping the component’s administrative operations running smoothly, supporting the broader mandate of the Expanded Public Works Programme through accurate record-keeping, procurement coordination, and stakeholder liaison. As an entry-level clerical post, it serves as a practical gateway into government administration, with no prior experience required, although any exposure to administrative environments will be considered an added advantage.
Applicants need only a Grade 12 qualification, but they must demonstrate a solid understanding of relevant government policies, procedures, and legislation, including GPG and DID protocols and Public Service Regulations. Strong communication, analytical, report-writing, and research skills are essential, alongside computer literacy in MS Word, basic Excel, and Outlook. The ideal candidate is described as self-driven, a team player, adaptable, and innovative, capable of working with minimal supervision while integrating into a collaborative unit.
The duties are varied and hands-on. The successful candidate will record, organise, store, capture, and retrieve correspondence and data; update registers and statistics; and handle routine enquiries. Other responsibilities include making photocopies, sending and receiving facsimiles, distributing documents to stakeholders, maintaining the component’s filing system, and typing letters or other correspondence. The role also involves managing the component’s incoming and outgoing document register, liaising with internal and external parties on procurement matters, obtaining quotations, completing procurement forms for standard office items, and controlling office stationery stock. Asset management, leave registers, personnel records, and attendance registers all fall under this position, as do arranging travel and accommodation, capturing and updating expenditure, checking subsistence and travel claims for correctness before manager approval, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash.
This is a government post with a structured salary package and benefits, and the Department of Community Safety encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian, and white population groups to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry practical and integrity assessments, and all appointments are subject to personnel suitability checks including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. The department may choose not to appoint and reserves the right to use alternative recruitment processes. Applications not acknowledged within three months should be treated as unsuccessful, and candidates must ensure their application documents are complete and correctly submitted, including a SAQA evaluation for foreign qualifications.
