This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the effective functioning of the Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) unit within the Provincial Office in Mpumalanga. As an Administration Officer dedicated to Support Services, the incumbent will play a pivotal role in ensuring that labour inspection activities are well-coordinated, legally compliant, and administratively sound. The role sits within the broader mandate of the Department of Employment and Labour, which is responsible for upholding fair labour practices, promoting workplace safety, and enforcing compliance with South Africa’s labour legislation. The work is both operational and administrative, requiring a solid understanding of statutory frameworks and the ability to support inspectors and management through accurate record-keeping, audits, and reporting.
To be considered for this post, candidates must hold a three-year relevant tertiary qualification in Labour Relations, Human Resources Management, Public or Business Management, or Administration. In addition, at least one year of functional experience in Inspection or Administration Services is required. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as the role may involve travel to labour centres and inspection sites. The position demands a thorough working knowledge of key legislation and policies, including the Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, COIDA, Unemployment Insurance Act, and the Skills Development Act, as well as departmental policies and Public Service Regulations. Strong planning and organising abilities, computer literacy, interpersonal skills, problem-solving capacity, and effective verbal and written communication are also critical for success.
The core duties are varied and carry significant responsibility. The officer will perform all registrations pertaining to statutory services, including those under the BCEA, COIDA, UI, OHS, EEA, and LRA. This involves ensuring that employers and workplaces are correctly registered and that records are maintained in line with legal requirements. Another key responsibility is conducting Labour Centre audits to verify that the necessary tools of trade are in place, with the aim of improving IES systems and processes. The officer will also collect, compile, and consolidate IES statistical reports and submit these to the supervisor, providing essential data for decision-making and performance monitoring. Coordination and monitoring of local and Provincial Blitz Inspections form part of the role, requiring careful planning and liaison with various stakeholders. Additionally, the officer will prepare enforcement documents for the Labour Court, Public Protector, and Magistrate’s Court, which demands accuracy and attention to legal detail.
This is an OSD-graded position with a structured salary package. The Department encourages applications from designated groups, specifically African Males, Coloured Males, Indian Males and Females, White Males, and People with Disabilities, in line with its employment equity targets. Candidates should be prepared to work in a dynamic environment where compliance, accuracy, and service delivery are paramount. The post is based in the Mpumalanga Provincial Office, and interested applicants should note that the selection process will rely on the information provided in their applications, so it is important to clearly demonstrate how they meet the requirements. This role is ideal for an organised, detail-oriented professional who is passionate about labour law enforcement and public service administration.
