This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing security services within the Department of Community Safety, operating from the Corporate Services directorate in Johannesburg. The Administration Officer: Security acts as a central figure in maintaining a safe and compliant working environment, ensuring that the department's physical and information security measures function effectively. This is a hands-on operational role that requires a blend of administrative proficiency, technical understanding of security systems, and investigative capability.

To be considered, candidates must possess a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 6 in Public Management or Public Administration, coupled with one to two years of practical experience within a safety and security services environment. The role demands working knowledge of basic occupational health and safety principles, strong investigative skills, and familiarity with CCTV systems, digital video recorders, and access control technologies, including the creation of access cards and biometric access. A sound understanding of the Public Service Act and regulations, the Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) document, and the Safety and Security Act is essential, along with a strong customer service orientation.

The core duties revolve around the day-to-day administration and monitoring of technical security infrastructure. This includes operating and monitoring CCTV cameras, retrieving footage for investigative purposes, and collecting evidence stored on digital video recorders. The officer will also maintain and administer the access control system, which involves implementing and resetting card and biometric readers, creating access credentials for new employees, issuing identity cards with photographs, and issuing equipment pass-outs linked to access cards. Liaising with the IT unit and human resources regarding new appointments and resignations is a key function, as is maintaining and updating access and asset databases to prevent unauthorised access and minimise system downtime.

Beyond technical systems, the role involves conducting risk and threat assessments through regular walkabouts and inspections, implementing findings from security audits, and compiling reports on security breaches for submission to a supervisor. The officer assists in investigating all security incidents, liaising with the South African Police Service about stolen departmental assets, requesting affidavits, and interviewing staff to obtain statements. This extends to supporting investigations of all crimes and incidents within the department, coordinating the reporting of lost or damaged IT equipment, gathering evidence such as CCTV footage and witness statements, and producing investigation reports with recommendations. Furthermore, the position coordinates the implementation of staff vetting services, including facilitating vetting awareness programmes, arranging MISS training through the State Security Agency, issuing vetting forms, screening staff and service providers, and submitting completed forms for processing. The officer also maintains the vetting results database, communicates outcomes, assists with technical surveillance counter-measure sweeps where sensitive information is discussed, and safeguards classified information in line with the MISS framework.

Applicants should note that this is a public service position with a standard recruitment process. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and successful candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted within three months of the closing date.
