This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the operational backbone of the Department of Water and Sanitation, specifically within the Infrastructure Management branch. Based in Pretoria and focused on the Central Operation, the Administration Officer for Facilities Management will support the Water Resource Infrastructure Operations and Maintenance division. The role is central to ensuring that the physical working environment, buildings, and related services within this operational area are safe, functional, and efficiently managed, allowing the department to focus on its core mandate. Importantly, prospective applicants should note that the office is scheduled to transition to an SANWRI agency, which may have implications for the future employment context, although the immediate responsibilities remain anchored in the current departmental structure.
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a relevant qualification at NQF level 6 in Public Management, Administration, Facility Management, or a closely related field. In addition, at least one year of relevant experience in facilities management is required, along with a valid, unexpired driver’s licence which must be disclosed. Practical computer literacy within the Microsoft package is essential, as is a working knowledge of key government frameworks and principles. This includes Batho Pele principles, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Treasury Regulations, building environment management, Occupational Health and Safety standards, and an understanding of government operations as they relate to facilities management. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary, along with report writing capabilities, problem solving and analysis, and sound decision-making abilities.
The core duties of this position are broad and hands-on. The successful candidate will implement the building maintenance services plan for the Department of Water and Sanitation, ensuring that physical infrastructure remains in a good state of repair. This involves monitoring the performance of external service providers against agreed Service Level Agreements, supervising human resources and staff within the facilities team, and providing office accommodation by facilitating the allocation of space and equipment. The officer will also coordinate maintenance and cleaning services to ensure that all facilities meet operational needs. A significant part of the role is dedicated to enforcing Occupational Health and Safety standards and regulations, ensuring compliance across all buildings and worksites. Additional responsibilities include managing mobile services, overseeing leased equipment, and ensuring proper administration of after-hours bookings, travel and accommodation requests, and building parking management. The role demands an organised, proactive individual who can manage multiple facilities-related functions while maintaining compliance with government regulations and promoting a safe and productive workplace environment for all staff. Given the requirement to possibly undergo both practical and theoretical testing as part of the selection process, applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their knowledge and skills directly. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced facilities administration professional seeking to apply their expertise within a vital national government department.
