This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning of the Western Cape Mobility Department as an Administration Clerk within its Occupational Health and Safety (OHAS) component. Based in the Western Cape Government, the role is a support-services post graded at Level 05, making it suitable for entry-level administrative professionals who are organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a structured public-sector environment. The incumbent will work within a team that supports the department’s health and safety obligations, ensuring that administrative processes align with legislative requirements and departmental procedures. The role is particularly suited to individuals who thrive on routine tasks but can also adapt to changing priorities, tight deadlines, and occasional irregular hours.

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. Beyond this formal requirement, the department looks for a solid understanding of clerical duties and practices, including data capturing, computer operation, and the collection of statistics. Familiarity with the legislative framework governing the Public Service is essential, as is knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and the working procedures relevant to the environment. The ideal applicant will demonstrate strong computer skills, planning and organising abilities, and effective verbal and written communication. Meeting procedures and minute taking are also key, along with sound interpersonal relations, flexibility, teamwork, and the capacity to perform routine tasks using standard office equipment. The ability to work under pressure and a willingness to meet tight deadlines are important personal attributes for this role.

The core duties revolve around rendering comprehensive clerical support within the OHAS component. This includes general clerical services such as filing, record-keeping, and data management, as well as supply chain clerical support, which may involve procurement-related administrative tasks. The role also extends to personnel administration, where the clerk will assist with employee-related documentation and processes, and financial administration support, helping to maintain accurate financial records and assist with budget-related administrative functions. In all these areas, the clerk is expected to apply job knowledge, follow established procedures, and support the component’s overall efficiency and compliance.

Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a rigorous selection process. The department requires attendance at interviews on a date determined by the department, and candidates must submit duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe before the interview. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted applicants will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers or managers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a role for someone who values accuracy, integrity, and public service, and who is ready to support the vital administrative backbone of occupational health and safety within the Western Cape Mobility Department.
