This position offers an opportunity to serve as an Administration Clerk within the Department of Agriculture in the Western Cape Government, providing essential generic office support across multiple functional areas. The role is structured at a Level 05 grade and is based within a dynamic provincial department where administrative efficiency directly contributes to the broader agricultural service delivery mandate. As a generic office clerk, the incumbent will be expected to handle a wide variety of clerical tasks, making versatility, accuracy and a solid understanding of public service operations essential to success.

To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification at Grade 12 level. Beyond the formal qualification, the department looks for individuals with a working knowledge of clerical duties and practices, including the ability to capture data accurately, operate a computer and collect statistics. A sound understanding of the legislative framework governing the Public Service, as well as the specific working procedures applicable to the environment, is also required. On the skills side, applicants should be computer literate in the MS Office package, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication abilities. Good planning and organisational skills are essential, along with the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. These competencies ensure that the clerk can manage competing priorities and deliver reliable support in a busy government office.

The core duties of the role are varied and touch on several administrative domains. The successful candidate will render general clerical support services, which may include tasks such as record-keeping, filing, data capturing and handling correspondence. In addition, the position requires providing supply chain clerical support, assisting with procurement-related documentation and processes. Personnel administration clerical support is another key responsibility, involving the maintenance of employee records and supporting human resource functions. Financial administration support services also form part of the role, meaning the clerk may assist with basic financial record-keeping, invoice processing and related administrative controls. Furthermore, the incumbent will provide support services on Occupational Health and Safety compliance, helping to ensure that the workplace adheres to relevant safety regulations and that documentation and procedures are properly maintained.

Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a thorough selection process. Those invited to interviews will need to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from further consideration. All shortlisted applicants will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and another assessing integrity and ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a role for someone who is organised, ethical and ready to contribute to the smooth administrative functioning of a provincial government department.
