This position is for an Administration Clerk within the Forest Enterprise Development component of the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, based in Pretoria. The role provides essential administrative and clerical support to the unit, ensuring smooth office operations and assisting with procurement, logistics, and financial administration. As part of the broader public service environment, the incumbent will work within the framework of the Public Service Regulations and the Public Finance Management Act, and will need to understand basic procurement processes and organisational procedures.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA. While formal tertiary study is not required, prior exposure to office administration or an environment-related setting will be an added advantage. The role demands solid computer literacy, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Because the office can be demanding, the successful candidate must be able to perform under extreme pressure, handle difficult individuals, and resolve conflicts with professionalism. The department also values responsibility and loyalty in its staff.

The duties are varied and include rendering general clerical support such as recording, organising, storing, capturing and retrieving correspondence and information. The clerk will update registers, handle routine enquiries, make photocopies, send and receive emails, and distribute documents or packages to stakeholders. Maintaining an effective filing system and keeping an accurate incoming and outgoing document register are also key responsibilities. Typing documents and other correspondence when required forms part of the daily work.

In addition to general clerical tasks, the position provides supply chain clerical support. This involves liaising with internal and external stakeholders on procurement matters, obtaining quotations, completing procurement forms for standard office items, and maintaining the component’s asset register. Logistical support is another important area, including keeping leave registers, personnel records and attendance registers, as well as arranging travel and accommodation for officials. Financial administration support is also required: capturing and updating expenditure, verifying the correctness of subsistence and travel claims before submitting them to the manager for approval, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash for the estate and regional office.

The National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups in line with the department’s equity plan, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will need to produce certified copies of their qualifications, identity document and driver’s licence on or before the interview date. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. All shortlisted applicants will be subjected to screening and security vetting, which may include criminal record checks, citizenship status verification, creditworthiness assessment, reference checks and qualification verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only successful candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
