This position is for an Administration Clerk specialising in Finance and Fees, based at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. The role sits within the hospital’s revenue environment, where the incumbent will be responsible for the accurate handling of state funds, cashiering duties, and the processing of financial transactions related to patient fees. As a government post, the work is governed by strict financial regulations and requires a high level of integrity, as the clerk will be dealing with public monies on a daily basis. The role is essential to ensuring that the hospital’s revenue collection processes run smoothly, that receipts are correctly captured, and that all cash and petty cash are managed in line with prescribed procedures.

To be considered for this role, applicants must have a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification, with Mathematics or Accounting as a passed subject. Alternatively, a Senior Certificate combined with relevant experience or competencies that directly address the key performance areas of the post will be accepted. In addition, candidates need appropriate experience in a fees or revenue related environment, which means they should already be familiar with the day-to-day operations of collecting and reconciling payments in a healthcare or similar setting. The role demands a strong sense of confidentiality, as financial and patient information must be handled discreetly. Good interpersonal and communication skills are also essential, along with computer literacy. Practical knowledge of financial systems such as BAS, AR, HIS, and Clinicom is required, as is an understanding of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and relevant Finance Instructions. The successful candidate must know the correct procedures for handling state monies, including journal capturing, petty cash processes, and refund procedures.

The main duties of the post include keeping state monies locked in the safe at all times to ensure their security. The clerk will be responsible for issuing petty cash and processing refunds from petty cash when required. Cashier duties form a significant part of the role, including conducting a proper handover when taking over from another cashier to ensure accountability and continuity. The clerk will also credit patients’ accounts on the AR system and capture receipts on BAS and through journal capturing. These tasks require attention to detail and a methodical approach, as errors in financial records can have serious consequences for the hospital and for patients.

This post is subject to the standard conditions of public service employment. It is important to note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this position. Shortlisted candidates may be required to attend a practical test as part of the selection process, which will assess their ability to perform the key tasks associated with the role. The position is based at a large tertiary hospital, so the work environment is busy and fast-paced, requiring the clerk to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and professionalism. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance or revenue clerk to contribute to the efficient financial administration of a major public healthcare institution.
