This position offers an opportunity to contribute to public safety and community resilience as an Administration Clerk specialising in Disaster Risk Reduction, based in Tygerberg within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Local Government. The role sits within a directorate dedicated to disaster risk reduction, where the successful candidate will provide essential administrative support that enables the unit to function effectively. As a Level 05 clerical post, it is an entry-level administrative role suited to individuals who are organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a structured government environment. The broader context of the work involves supporting the directorate’s efforts to coordinate disaster preparedness, response, and recovery activities across the province, making the administrative functions performed in this role a vital part of the wider public service machinery.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a Grade 12 Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. Beyond the formal qualification, the role demands a solid understanding of administrative processes and clerical duties, including the ability to capture data accurately. Knowledge of government operations, financial processes, and the Batho Pele Principles is also required, as is familiarity with the working procedures specific to the environment. Candidates should possess strong computer literacy in the MS Office package, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with effective record-keeping skills. Good written and verbal communication is essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. These competencies are necessary to handle the varied clerical responsibilities that come with supporting a busy public sector directorate.

The main duties of the position revolve around providing comprehensive administrative support to the Directorate. This includes offering supply chain clerical support services within the component, which means assisting with procurement-related documentation, vendor records, and related administrative tasks. The role also involves personnel administration clerical support, such as maintaining staff records, processing leave forms, and assisting with other human resource-related paperwork. In addition, the incumbent will provide financial administration support services, which may involve capturing financial data, processing invoices, and ensuring that financial records are kept in order. Together, these duties require a dependable individual who can manage multiple tasks, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to government policies and procedures.

Several important conditions apply to this vacancy. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department, so applicants from designated groups are encouraged to apply. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Shortlisted candidates must be available for interviews at a date, time, and place determined by the selection panel, and they will be required to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe before the interview. Failure to provide these documents without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. The successful candidate will also be subject to security vetting and must disclose their financial interests. Applications are only accepted online, and due to the high volume of interest, only shortlisted applicants will be contacted within ten weeks of the closing date. This is a demanding but rewarding clerical role for those who are committed to public service and administrative excellence.
