This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning of the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment as an Administration Clerk specialising in accommodation and auxiliary services, based at the department’s Bisho office. The role sits within a directorate that depends on efficient administrative and logistical support to carry out its mandate. As the first point of coordination for many routine but critical processes, the successful candidate will help ensure that correspondence, travel, procurement, records and financial administration are handled accurately, timeously and confidentially. The post is an OSD-graded clerical role, making it suitable for entry-level applicants who meet the basic educational requirements and who are keen to build a career in public service administration.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate. While not mandatory, a post-matric qualification and relevant administrative experience will be an added advantage. The role demands a sound working knowledge of administrative procedures, procurement policies and financial management, as well as familiarity with public service prescripts and procedures. Computer literacy is essential, along with strong written and spoken communication skills, report writing ability and good interpersonal relations. The successful candidate will need sound organising and planning skills, the capacity to work long hours voluntarily and to plan under pressure, and the ability to gather and analyse information. The work also requires strict adherence to policies, the ability to work independently, and the capacity to function effectively as part of a team.

The core duties involve providing comprehensive administrative and logistical support to the Directorate. This includes receiving and registering incoming and outgoing correspondence, making photocopies, assisting with petty cash requests and procuring office stock. The clerk will be responsible for records management, the confidential distribution of documents, and maintaining and overseeing the directorate’s filing system. Travel arrangements for officials must be made, and travel claims handled. In addition, the position assists with the management of finances within the directorate, including the procurement of goods and services using the correct procedures, preparing quarterly procurement reports, and ensuring that orders are created and invoices are paid timeously.

The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups in line with its equity plan. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to screening and security vetting, which may include criminal record checks, citizenship verification, creditworthiness assessment, reference checks and qualification verification. Applicants must submit a fully completed online Z83 form along with a detailed CV containing at least three contactable references; failure to disclose all required information will result in automatic disqualification. Certified copies of qualifications, identity documents and driver’s licences will be required from shortlisted candidates on or before the interview date. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Correspondence will be limited to successful candidates, and applicants who have not been contacted within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
