This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning of the Security Management component at Head Office in Johannesburg, operating within the broader Corporate Management Services directorate. As an Administration Clerk, the incumbent will serve as a central support hub for the component, ensuring that administrative processes run efficiently and in line with public service regulations. The role is entry-level in nature, making it an ideal starting point for individuals who have just completed their schooling and are seeking to build a career in the public sector, while also offering a structured environment for those looking to apply their clerical skills.
Candidates need only a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4, and no prior work experience is required. However, applicants must have a clean record with no criminal convictions or pending cases. The role demands a solid grasp of clerical duties and practices, including the ability to capture data, operate a computer and compile statistics. A sound understanding of the legislative framework governing the Public Service is essential, along with knowledge of the specific work procedures relevant to the security environment. Key personal attributes include good communication and interpersonal relations, flexibility, teamwork, planning and organisational skills, and proficiency in language with strong verbal and written communication abilities.
The duties are broad and varied, encompassing general clerical support, supply chain administration, personnel administration and financial administration. In the general clerical sphere, the successful candidate will record, organise, store, capture and retrieve correspondence and data, update registers and statistics, handle routine enquiries, make photocopies, send and receive faxes, and distribute documents to stakeholders. Maintaining the component’s filing system and typing correspondence when required are also central responsibilities, as is keeping the incoming and outgoing document register. On the supply chain side, the clerk will liaise with internal and external parties regarding procurement, obtain quotations, complete procurement forms for standard office items, manage stationery stock control, and maintain the asset register. Personnel administration duties include maintaining the leave register, personnel records and attendance register, as well as arranging travel and accommodation. Financial administrative support involves capturing and updating expenditure, checking subsistence and travel claims before manager approval, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash.
The advertisement carries several important conditions. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV only at the initial stage; certified copies of qualifications are required only from shortlisted candidates. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and will also be subject to personnel suitability checks including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages youth and people with disabilities, as well as candidates from designated groups such as coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply, with a medical practitioner’s confirmation required for disability. No posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications will be accepted, and due to the expected high volume, only shortlisted applicants will be contacted; if no response arrives within three months of the closing date, the application should be considered unsuccessful.
