This vacancy offers four positions for an Administrative Clerk within the Biodiversity Management directorate of the Gauteng provincial government. Successful candidates will be placed across various provincial nature reserves and regional offices, providing essential clerical and administrative support to the department's conservation and biodiversity functions. This is an entry-level role that requires no prior work experience, making it an excellent opportunity for recent matriculants or individuals with a recognised qualification at Grade 12 level. The position is graded according to the public service salary structure and includes standard benefits, with the exact remuneration package detailed in the official advertisement.
The core responsibilities of the role revolve around rendering comprehensive administrative support to departmental activities. This includes the processing and capturing of applications for services and activities, particularly those related to permitting and client bookings or reservations systems. The clerk will receive and manage correspondence, maintain accurate records and electronic databases, and track processes and related documentation. A key focus is on improving efficiency through the use of digital systems and electronic administrative processes, so computer literacy is essential. The role also involves taking and distributing meeting minutes, handling filing and administrative records, and providing clerical support within the unit. Additionally, the clerk will handle communications and enquiries from clients, monitor the use of telecommunication facilities, and maintain a high standard of customer service, ensuring a professional and responsive interaction with the public. Financial management support is another important duty, which includes collecting revenue and payments from clients for services rendered.
To be considered, applicants must possess a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). While no experience is required, candidates should demonstrate knowledge of clerical duties and practices, as well as the ability to capture data, operate a computer, and collect statistics. Strong verbal and written communication skills are also necessary, along with general computer proficiency. The application process is strictly online through the provincial government's jobs portal, and applicants must complete the official Z83 form and attach a recently updated CV. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and they will be required to bring originally certified copies of their qualifications, identity document, and driver's licence (if applicable) at the interview stage. Failure to submit all requested documents will result in the application being disqualified.
Successful candidates will undergo a security clearance, including a criminal record check and verification of qualifications. All shortlisted candidates may also be subjected to a technical exercise designed to test relevant job-related skills, and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment may be part of the selection process. The department reserves the right to use these exercises as additional criteria during interviews. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted applicants only, and if you have not been contacted within three months after the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. This position is ideal for individuals who are organised, detail-oriented, and committed to providing efficient administrative support within a public service environment focused on biodiversity conservation.
