This sessional diagnostic radiographer post, based at the Oral Health Centre across the Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain sites, forms part of the Western Cape Government’s Metro Health Services directorate. The role is offered on a 20-hour-per-week contract running until 30 November 2027, and is graded from Grade 1 through Grade 3 depending on the successful candidate’s level of post-registration experience. As a sessional position, it provides flexible working arrangements within a multidisciplinary dental and oral health environment, where the radiographer will be integral to diagnostic imaging support for oral and maxillofacial procedures.

Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in Diagnostic Radiography, and must be registered as a Radiographer in Diagnostics. The required experience varies by grade: for Grade 1, no post-registration experience is needed for South African qualified employees, though foreign qualified applicants who are exempt from community service need at least one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience for locally trained radiographers, or eleven years for foreign qualified professionals. Grade 3 demands twenty years of experience for South African graduates and twenty-one years for foreign qualified candidates. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, as travel between the two sites may be necessary.

The core duties involve delivering optimal radiographic services within a multidisciplinary team, strictly applying the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle to minimise radiation exposure. The radiographer will record patient and examination statistics, manage stock levels effectively, and conduct regular quality assurance checks and equipment safety tests. Supervision and clinical training of radiography students during sessions is also expected, alongside attendance at departmental meetings and continuing professional development activities. The role demands strong computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, excellent interpersonal skills, professional ethics, the ability to work independently and under pressure, and a thorough understanding of radiography techniques, radiation protection, and equipment safety protocols.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo both written and oral assessments. While registration with the HPCSA is a standard requirement, candidates who do not yet hold the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and payment of the prescribed fees on or before the interview date. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for first-time registration in a specific category, or those changing their registration status. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The position is advertised under PSV Circular 39 of 2026, post number 39/395, and all applications must be submitted through the designated online portal as specified in the full advertisement.
