This vacancy offers three posts for professional nurses specialising in general nursing within the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre, operating under the Metro Health Services directorate. Two positions are based in the Neuro Rehab unit and one in Nursing Relief, making this an opportunity for nurses who are comfortable working in a rehabilitation setting and who can adapt to changing ward demands. The role is graded at professional nurse levels one to three, meaning candidates with varying degrees of experience may apply, and appointment will be made at the appropriate grade based on years of service after registration.
To be considered, applicants must hold a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent R683 qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing (R174) or a three-year diploma in nursing (R171) that allows registration as a General Nurse is acceptable. In all cases, current registration with SANC is mandatory. Experience requirements differ by grade: entry-level grade one requires no post-registration experience, while grade two requires at least ten years of appropriate nursing experience after registration, and grade three requires twenty years. This structure allows both newer graduates and seasoned professionals to apply for the same advertisement.
The duties are centred on delivering holistic, high-quality nursing care within a legal and ethical framework. Successful candidates will be expected to utilise human and financial resources effectively to keep the unit running smoothly, participate in training, development and research activities, and provide support to the broader nursing service. Because the setting is a rehabilitation centre, nurses will also contribute to interdisciplinary team functioning, assist with discharge planning to help patients transition back home or into the community, and guide other nursing staff in applying care processes and procedures. Maintaining ethical standards and pursuing professional growth are also key responsibilities.
Candidates must be willing to work shifts, overtime, weekends and public holidays, and to rotate to other wards when operational needs require it. Strong knowledge of nursing processes and legal-ethical practice is essential, along with computer literacy in MS Office and Outlook. Good written and verbal communication, report-writing ability, and the capacity to work both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team are all important. The post is subject to the usual conditions of public service employment, and no payment of any kind is required when applying. Enquiries may be directed to the contact person named in the advertisement. This is a chance to join a specialised rehabilitation environment and make a meaningful contribution to patient care in the Western Cape.
