This position offers an opportunity for a registered professional nurse to join the primary health care team at Asla Clinic in the Mossel Bay Sub-district, within the broader Garden Route District. The role is graded at Professional Nurse Level 1 to 3, meaning the appointment level and corresponding remuneration will depend on the candidate’s years of appropriate nursing experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in General Nursing. A nurse entering at Grade 1 may have no prior experience, while Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years and Grade 3 requires at least twenty years of recognisable post-registration nursing experience. The post is an OSD-graded position, and the successful candidate will be expected to function as a clinical leader within a primary health care setting.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing or an equivalent combination of qualifications that also allows SANC registration will be accepted. In addition to the educational requirements, candidates must be registered with the SANC as a Professional Nurse. There is also a concession for applicants who do not yet have the stipulated registration: they may apply, but they will only be considered for appointment if they provide proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status.

The core duties of the role involve providing direction and supervision to ensure the implementation of quality, comprehensive nursing care within the primary health care context. The nurse will be responsible for maintaining ethical practice within legal and regulatory frameworks, fostering constructive working relationships with all members of the primary health care team, and utilising human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The position also requires participation in training programmes and research activities, as well as maintaining workplace discipline among subordinates. Because the role is based in a clinic that forms part of an Ecosystem Service platform, the incumbent should expect to render clinical services across other institutions within the ecosystem as needed to sustain health service delivery.

Candidates must be willing to work overtime when required and must hold a valid driver’s licence, as the role includes driving a mobile clinic vehicle. Strong planning and organisational skills, self-discipline, motivation, the ability to function independently under pressure, and good communication skills are essential competencies for success in this position. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. This is a permanent professional nursing opportunity within the public health sector, offering a meaningful career path for nurses dedicated to community-based primary health care in the Garden Route District.
