This position is for a Professional Nurse Grade 1 to 3, specialising in general nursing within the female and children’s wards at Mossel Bay Hospital, which falls under the Garden Route District. The role is a permanent nursing post within a public healthcare facility, and it offers a structured career progression across three grades based on years of experience. As part of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, the successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering quality patient care in a hospital setting. The post is linked to the broader Ecosystem Service platform, meaning that while the base location is Mossel Bay Hospital, the incumbent may be expected to render clinical services across other institutions within the ecosystem as needed to sustain health service delivery.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174) or an equivalent combination of qualifications is acceptable. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is a mandatory requirement. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is required. For Grade 2, candidates need a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing. For Grade 3, a minimum of twenty years of such experience is required. Candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees to SANC on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category.
The core duties of this role involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing plan, ensuring that clinical practice and patient care are delivered to a high standard. The nurse will implement standards, practices, criteria, and indicators for quality nursing, and must practise in accordance with all laws and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare. Maintaining constructive working relationships with nursing colleagues and other stakeholders is essential, as is the efficient and effective utilisation of human, material, and physical resources. The role also includes participating in training, development, and research within the nursing department, as well as providing support to nursing services. The position requires a willingness to work shifts, night duty, overtime, public holidays, and weekends, and to rotate to other wards within the hospital as needed.
Candidates should possess basic computer literacy in MS Office, the ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team, and excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of nursing practices and infection prevention and control measures is also required. This is an OSD-graded post, and no payment of any kind is required when applying. Enquiries can be directed to the contact person named in the advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for both newly qualified and experienced professional nurses seeking to contribute to public healthcare in the Garden Route District.
