The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, through its Emergency and Clinical Support Services Directorate, is recruiting four Emergency Medical Services Station Managers across three district offices. These are permanent, OSD-graded management positions within the provincial emergency care system, with placements available in the Overberg district (Swellendam and Caledon), the Cape Winelands district (Robertson), and the West Coast district (Vredenburg). The successful candidates will be responsible for the overall operational management of pre-hospital emergency care services within their designated geographic areas, ensuring that response times, clinical standards, and resource utilisation meet provincial requirements. This is a leadership role that combines clinical oversight with administrative and human resource management, requiring a candidate who can balance frontline emergency response with the disciplined execution of station-level logistics, budgeting, and staff supervision.
The post is advertised across four grades, each with its own entry-level qualification and registration requirements. For Grade 3, applicants must have successfully completed the Immediate Life Support (ILS) course and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA). Grade 4 requires completion of the Emergency Care Technician (ECT) course with HPCSA registration as an ECT. Grade 5 calls for the Critical Care Assistant (CCA) course or a National Diploma, with registration as a Paramedic. Grade 6 demands a B-Tech degree in Emergency Care, leading to HPCSA registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP). In all cases, a minimum of three years of post-registration experience in the relevant clinical capacity is mandatory. Additionally, candidates must hold a valid Code C1 driver’s licence and a valid Code 10 Professional Driver’s Permit, and must be physically and mentally fit to perform as emergency services practitioners. The role also requires excellent knowledge of all levels of emergency care protocols, strong communication and interpersonal skills, computer literacy in the MS Office package, and proven report writing abilities.
The core duties of the Station Manager include managing pre-hospital emergency care services within the assigned area, responding to major incidents as needed, and ensuring that all emergency vehicles and equipment are maintained efficiently and effectively. The position carries direct accountability for audit compliance in supply chain management and human resource matters, including the station’s budget allocation and the facilitation of account payments for goods and services. The manager is expected to supervise and manage staff in line with labour relations and HR policies, conduct regular meetings, workshops, and debriefs, and compile statistics and reports for the district manager. The role also requires providing effective support to the District Manager and acting in a management capacity when required. This is a demanding position that suits experienced emergency care professionals seeking to move into operational leadership within the public health sector.
Applicants should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The positions are subject to the inherent requirements of the job, including current registration with the HPCSA in the relevant category. The selection process will consider the department’s employment equity targets, and preference may be given to candidates from designated groups in line with provincial policies. The closing date for applications is clearly indicated in the vacancy notice, and all applications must be submitted through the specified online portal using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. For further enquiries, contact details for the respective district offices are provided in the original advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified emergency care professionals to take on a strategic management role within a dynamic provincial emergency medical service.
