This position offers an opportunity for an experienced professional nurse to join the West Coast District’s primary health care team as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner at the Malmesbury Community Day Centre, located within the Swartland Sub-District. The role is graded at Clinical Nurse Practitioner Level 1 or Level 2, depending on the successful candidate’s years of relevant experience and specialist qualifications. Working within the broader public health ecosystem of the Western Cape, the incumbent will be expected to deliver comprehensive, patient-centred care and to support the facility in meeting its service delivery obligations. Importantly, the post is linked to an ecosystem of institutions and facilities, meaning that the appointed nurse may be required to render clinical services across different sites within the ecosystem as operational needs arise, ensuring continuity and sustainability of health services in the area.

Applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification, either a diploma or degree, that meets the R425 requirements or an equivalent qualification such as R683 plus R254, enabling registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, candidates need a post-basic qualification in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, which must be a one-year diploma accredited by the SANC under R48, or a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing under R174 or equivalent, or a SANC-accredited postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing under R635. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience, of which at least ten years must be in the specific speciality after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification. Alternatively, possession of the postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing may satisfy the speciality experience requirement. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job.

The core duties involve the effective execution and management of several key health programmes within the scope of practice. These include curative programmes, child health services, women’s health services, and HAST programmes, which cover HIV, AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. In each of these areas, the nurse acts as an advocate for the patient, ensuring that necessary health care is provided and that the patient’s needs are addressed. The role also requires a strong focus on quality assurance, with the expectation that services are delivered at a high standard and measured against defined outcomes. Competencies required include computer literacy in MS Word and Excel, in-depth knowledge of nursing and public service legislation, and appropriate experience in a primary health care setting, as well as experience in rendering support services.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a practical, written, and oral assessment. There is no application fee. Candidates who do not yet hold the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they are first-time applicants for the relevant post-basic qualification and can submit proof of application for registration and payment of the prescribed fees to the SANC on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies specifically to the post-basic qualification in Curative Skills in Clinical Nursing Science or the postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a dedicated nurse committed to public health service in a community setting.
