This position offers an exciting opportunity for experienced nursing professionals to join the maternity unit at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, one of the Western Cape’s major tertiary healthcare facilities. The role is a specialty nursing post within the maternity module, with five vacancies distributed across post-natal and antenatal wards (two posts), antenatal care (one post), and obstetrics and gynaecology (two posts). As a Professional Nurse specialising in maternity, you will be responsible for delivering and overseeing high-quality, specialised clinical care to mothers and newborns, working within a multidisciplinary team to ensure patient safety and positive outcomes. The role is graded at Professional Nurse Level 1 or 2, depending on your years of experience, and is structured under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for nursing.

To be considered, you must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing (diploma or degree) that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse, or an equivalent qualification such as R683 plus R254. In addition, you need a post-basic qualification of at least one year, accredited by the SANC, in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree (R174) or equivalent, combined with a post-graduate diploma (R635) in Midwifery, also meets the educational requirement. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, you need a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration. For Grade 2, you need at least fourteen years of relevant nursing experience, of which at least ten years must be in the specialty of maternity after obtaining your post-basic qualification. The role demands flexibility, as you must be willing to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to rotate within the maternity module to meet operational needs.

Your core duties will include identifying patient care needs, planning and implementing individualised nursing care plans, and educating nursing personnel within the specialty area. You will render and supervise specialised clinical nursing care, support clinical staff with complex procedures, and ensure the efficient use of human, material, and physical resources. You will also be expected to demonstrate leadership in achieving the strategic goals of the department, apply relevant legislation and policies, and uphold the core values of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. Strong skills in planning, organising, problem-solving, and decision-making are essential. Enquiries can be directed to the contact person listed in the circular. Please note that no payment is required when applying. Candidates who do not yet hold the required post-basic qualification may be appointed into the general stream, with a condition to obtain the qualification within a set period. Those lacking the stipulated registration may also apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and payment of fees before the interview, but this concession applies only to first-time applicants for the relevant post-basic qualification. This is a permanent, full-time post within the public service, and the closing date is provided in the circular.
