This position offers an opportunity for a qualified and experienced professional nurse to join the maternity unit at Clanwilliam Hospital, which serves the Cederberg Sub-District within the West Coast Health District of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. As a Professional Nurse specialising in maternity, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive, holistic, and specialised nursing care to mothers and neonates within a dedicated maternity section, operating within the professional and legal frameworks that govern nursing practice in South Africa. The role is graded at Professional Nurse Level 1 to 2, meaning the appointment level and corresponding remuneration will depend on your years of relevant experience and qualifications, with the position being part of the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for nursing professionals.

To be considered, you must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing (a diploma or degree) or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, you need a post-basic qualification in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, accredited by the SANC, with a duration of at least one year, or alternatively a four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree combined with a postgraduate diploma in Midwifery that is also SANC-accredited. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, you need a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, you need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which at least ten years must be specifically in the maternity specialty after obtaining the relevant post-basic qualification or postgraduate diploma. Candidates who do not yet have the required registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for first-time registration in the specialty and proof of payment of the prescribed fees before the interview date.

Your core duties will include providing high-quality, specialised maternity care within set standards, ensuring the effective use of human, financial, and material resources, participating in training and research activities, and offering support to the broader nursing services. You must maintain professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development. The role requires you to be prepared to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and overtime, and to be computer literate in MS Word and Excel with sound recordkeeping skills. You should be able to work independently, take accountability, and function without direct supervision. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a practical test. This is a permanent post within the public service, and no payment of any kind is required when applying. The position is subject to the department’s employment equity targets, and the Western Cape Government is an equal opportunity employer. For further details, the contact person is Mr NM Goeieman, and applications must be submitted online via the specified Western Cape Government portal using a compatible browser.
