This position is a clinical nurse practitioner role within the Primary Health Care support and outreach team based at George sub-district clinics in the Garden Route District. The successful candidates will be appointed at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level depending on their years of experience and will be expected to deliver comprehensive primary health care services to surrounding communities. The role sits within a broader multidisciplinary team and involves not only direct patient care but also supporting the facility in managing the burden of disease, implementing health promotion activities, and linking with community structures and non-profit organisations. The work requires a strong understanding of the public health environment and a commitment to quality-of-service delivery in a district health system.

Candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification such as R683 combined with R254, that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing under R174, or an equivalent combination of R171 and R1497, is acceptable. This must be accompanied by a post-basic nursing qualification with a duration of at least one year in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with the SANC under R48, or a post-graduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing under R635. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is required. For Grade 2, the practitioner must have at least fourteen years of appropriate experience, with no fewer than ten of those years gained after completing the relevant post-basic qualification or diploma in the specialty.

The duties are varied and include assisting with the management of the burden of disease according to comprehensive health programmes, planning and implementing health promotion and prevention activities both in the facility and in the community, and collecting data and submitting reports. The nurse will provide primary health care services directly to patients, and will also be involved in supporting facility management functions, including human resources, finance, supply chain management, strategy, health support, and infrastructure and equipment management, all under supervision. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, as is willingness to work overtime when needed and to drive a mobile clinic vehicle. Applicants should have good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, report writing and liaison skills, basic computer proficiency in programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, and ideally NIMART training or experience.

Candidates who do not yet meet the registration requirements for the post-basic qualification are permitted to apply, but they will only be considered for appointment if they provide proof of application for registration with the SANC and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to first-time applicants for registration in Curative Skills in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care or the post-graduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing. All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to a practical or oral assessment, and no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. These posts offer a valuable opportunity for experienced primary health care nurses to contribute to community health in the Garden Route District.
