This position offers an experienced professional nurse the opportunity to practice as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner specialising in Primary Health Care within the Garden Route District, based at the Asla Community Health Centre in the Mossel Bay Sub-district. The role is an Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) graded post, meaning recognition is given for appropriate experience and qualifications. Working within the Western Cape Department of Health, the successful candidate will be part of a broader ecosystem of health facilities and should expect to render clinical services across institutions within that ecosystem as needed to sustain service delivery, and to work collaboratively with facility and community structures.

The core purpose of the role is to deliver comprehensive primary health care services to the surrounding communities, with a strong emphasis on managing the burden of disease in line with national comprehensive health programmes. Duties include planning and implementing health promotion and disease prevention activities both within the facility and out in the community, building linkages with community structures and non-profit organisations, collecting and submitting data and reports, and providing direct clinical primary care services. In addition, the practitioner is expected to assist with operational management functions under supervision, including human resources, finance, supply chain management, strategy, health support, and infrastructure and equipment management. This requires a blend of clinical expertise, leadership, and administrative ability, as well as the willingness to work overtime and to drive a mobile clinic vehicle when required.

Applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification recognised by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) that allows registration as a Professional Nurse. This may be a diploma or degree in nursing under the R425 qualification or an equivalent, or a four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree with the relevant equivalent qualifications. In addition, candidates need either a one-year post-basic diploma in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with the SANC, or a postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing accredited with SANC. Registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC is essential. Experience requirements are structured: for Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is needed; for Grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate experience, including ten years gained after obtaining the relevant post-basic or postgraduate specialty qualification. A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, as is a willingness to work overtime and drive a mobile clinic.

Key competencies include NIMART training or experience, strong communication and problem-solving skills, report writing, liaison and facilitation abilities, and basic computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. Candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees by the day of the interview. This concession is limited to first-time applications for registration in the specific post-basic qualifications mentioned. Candidates will be subjected to a practical or oral assessment, and no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Enquiries may be directed to the contact person listed in the vacancy notice.
