This vacancy is for a Radiographer specialising in ultrasound, based at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory, Cape Town. The post is advertised at three levels — Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 — allowing appointment according to the candidate’s level of experience. The successful applicant will join the hospital’s diagnostic imaging team, performing vascular ultrasound procedures and contributing to patient diagnosis and care within a busy tertiary healthcare environment. As a public sector position, the role carries a strong expectation of ethical practice, patient confidentiality, professionalism and the ability to manage stressful situations calmly.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in Ultrasound Radiography, and must be registered as a Radiographer in that category. For Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required for South African qualified employees, while foreign qualified applicants who are exempt from community service need one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years’ relevant experience for locally qualified candidates and eleven years for foreign qualified applicants. Grade 3 requires twenty years for RSA-qualified employees and twenty-one years for foreign qualified applicants. The role also demands a thorough understanding of human anatomy and physiology, knowledge of disease pathologies as they relate to sonographic findings, and appropriate experience in vascular ultrasound. Candidates must be able to interact effectively with both patients and medical staff, clearly explaining technical information and collaborating on patient care. Basic computer literacy and familiarity with reporting systems are essential, as is a commitment to lifelong learning through advanced education, research and staff training.

The main duties include performing procedures in vascular ultrasonography, ensuring high-quality image analysis to accurately contribute to the diagnosis of abnormalities, and providing quality patient-centred care to all patients. The radiographer will actively participate as a member of the health service institution, conduct clinical audits within the department, attend departmental meetings and contribute to presentations. Other responsibilities include operating imaging equipment and reviewing images to ensure they are of good quality, maintaining clinical, professional and ethical standards, and providing training and support as appropriate. The post holder may also be allocated other duties by the Head of Department.

Notably, no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category with the relevant council, including individuals who must apply for a change in registration status. The vacancy is advertised under the relevant public service circular, and interested applicants should refer to the closing date and application instructions shown in the listing.
