This position offers an opportunity for a qualified medical specialist to join the Mpumalanga Department of Health at Themba Hospital, situated in the Ehlanzeni District, as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The role is graded at levels 1 through 3, allowing for appointment based on the candidate's years of relevant post-registration experience. The successful applicant will be responsible for the comprehensive management and coordination of Obstetrics and Gynaecology services within this level 2/3 package of care facility, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to uphold the institution's standards of patient care and support its broader aims and objectives.
Applicants must hold qualifications that permit registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with registration expected in 2026. Non-South African citizens will need a valid work permit. The required experience levels are structured by grade: Grade 1 requires no experience after registration for locally qualified candidates, though foreign-qualified employees need at least one year of relevant experience post-registration with a recognised foreign professional body or the HPCSA. Grade 2 demands a minimum of five years of experience after HPCSA registration, or six years for foreign-qualified applicants. Grade 3 requires ten years of experience post-registration, or eleven years for those with foreign qualifications. Beyond formal experience, the role demands sound knowledge of medical ethics, familiarity with current health and public service regulations, and proven competence in consultations, history taking, clinical assessment, and patient management. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently, handle pressure, work beyond normal hours, and collaborate effectively within a diverse team. The post also requires a capacity for teaching and guiding junior staff, along with behavioural attributes such as stress tolerance, self-confidence, and the ability to build and maintain good working relationships.
The core duties involve supervising the clinical management of patients admitted to the facility, coordinating Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, and executing functions with proficiency. The specialist will assist in developing and implementing guidelines and protocols, participate actively in academic and training programmes, and contribute to clinical audits and continuous professional development. Supporting hospital management to maintain efficient patient care standards is also a key responsibility, alongside compliance with the Performance Management and Development System, which includes conducting quarterly reviews and final assessments.
Candidates should note that applications are submitted online through the departmental system, and only online submissions will be accepted. Applicants must complete and sign form Z83 and attach a detailed CV, while certified copies of qualifications are only required from shortlisted candidates. Those currently in service should indicate their PERSAL number on the form. All shortlisted candidates will undergo a vetting process, and the department reserves the right to verify qualifications and to withdraw or amend posts as necessary. If applicants do not receive a response within 90 days of the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful.
