This position offers an opportunity for a skilled and experienced built environment professional to serve as a Chief Works Inspector on a three-year contract basis. Five posts are available across different districts within the province, specifically in eThekwini (with separate posts for the South and West areas), iLembe, uThukela, and Amajuba. Each post is independent, and applicants must apply separately for each district they are interested in, using a distinct application form for each. The role sits within the public works or infrastructure development sphere, focusing on the inspection, supervision, and management of building and construction projects, both new and existing, and carries a supervisory responsibility over other works inspectors.

To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Matric certificate along with a National Diploma in the Built Environment or an equivalent qualification. Alternatively, an N6 qualification combined with a passed trade test in the built environment is acceptable. In addition to the formal qualifications, applicants need more than three years of relevant, appropriate experience in the field. A valid driver’s license is also a mandatory requirement, as the role involves travelling to various project sites and conducting inspections. Beyond these baseline criteria, the position demands a robust set of technical and professional competencies. This includes a thorough knowledge of the National Building Regulations, the NHBRC Home Building Manual, and SABS specifications for building materials. Candidates should also possess technical knowledge, an understanding of project management principles, and strong numeracy and literacy skills. Practical skills such as driving, operating equipment, and effective communication in relevant languages are essential. The role also requires project management and financial management abilities, a service-oriented attitude, and the capacity to work under pressure and put in extra hours when necessary. Teamwork, openness to suggestions and new ideas, receptiveness to challenges, and unwavering integrity and honesty are equally important personal attributes.

The core duties of the Chief Works Inspector are multifaceted and centre on ensuring that construction and repair work meets required standards and regulations. The incumbent will identify needs for new work and repairs by investigating customer complaints and assessing requests for new services. They will render a full inspection service on work completed for new projects and on existing structures, ensuring compliance with building codes and specifications. Another key responsibility is to analyse and compile relevant project documents for both new and existing structures, which involves reviewing plans, reports, and other technical paperwork. The role also includes managing the activities of contractors on project sites, overseeing their performance, and ensuring that work progresses according to schedule and quality expectations. Additionally, the post requires gathering and submitting information related to the extended public works programme, which is a government initiative aimed at providing work opportunities and skills development. Finally, the Chief Works Inspector is responsible for supervising the performance and conduct of Works Inspectors, providing guidance and ensuring that the inspection team operates effectively and ethically. This is a demanding but rewarding position for a seasoned professional looking to apply their expertise in a supervisory capacity within the public sector.
