This is a three-year contract position for a GISc Technologist (Production) within the human settlements and physical planning environment, based in Durban. The role is core to the department’s spatial information function, supporting decision-making through the design, development, and management of geographic information systems. As a production-focused technologist, you will be responsible for building and maintaining spatial databases, producing maps and related geospatial products, and ensuring that accurate and up-to-date spatial information is readily available to internal clients and stakeholders. The work requires a strong understanding of the Land Information System (LIS) and the Human Settlements Master Spatial Plan (MSP), as well as a broader awareness of how GIS contributes to human settlements planning and delivery.
To be considered, applicants must hold a degree in a GISc-related qualification and have at least three years of relevant post-qualification GISc experience. Compulsory registration with SAGC/PLATO as a GISc Technologist is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical skills across two or more GIS software packages, combined with analytical, statistical, and mathematical proficiency. Project management and programme management capabilities are essential, as is the ability to conduct research and development, ensure legal compliance, and write technical reports. The role also calls for excellent problem-solving, networking, and communication skills, with the ability to collect, organise, and critically evaluate information. Creating a high-performance culture and managing both human and financial resources are key competencies, since the position involves oversight and knowledge-sharing responsibilities.
The main duties are varied and production-oriented. You will design and implement spatial databases to store required datasets, apply geo-referencing and datum/projection transformations, and develop geo-databases, maps, and related projects. You will provide access to spatial information and GIS services across the department, ensure interoperability between systems to maximise efficiency, and publish data into a web-based GIS platform for internet distribution. Managing and implementing knowledge-sharing initiatives is a key part of the role, as is developing process models and workflow diagrams. You will also be expected to research, investigate, and advise on emerging GIS technologies to keep the department at the forefront of spatial innovation.
The position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for GISc Technologists and is a contract appointment for a fixed term of three years. The role is based in Durban, and the work environment is dynamic and technical, requiring someone who can work independently and collaboratively. If you are a registered GISc Technologist with a strong production background and a passion for applying spatial science to human settlements, this is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to planning and service delivery.
