This is a professional town and regional planning opportunity within the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, offering eight contract posts at Grade A to C level. The successful candidates will be placed across various district offices, including eThekwini (South and West), uGu, Harry Gwala, uMzinyathi, Zululand, uMkhanyakude, and uThukela. Each post is a three-year contract, and the positions are graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for town and regional planners, reflecting the senior professional nature of the work. The role is central to ensuring that land development in these districts aligns with sound town and regional planning principles, statutory frameworks, and the broader developmental objectives of the province.

Applicants must hold a degree in Urban, Town and Regional Planning, or a relevant equivalent qualification, and must be registered with the South African Council for the Planning Profession (SACPLAN) as a Professional Town and Regional Planner at the time of appointment. In addition, at least three years of post-qualification experience in town and regional planning is required. A valid driver's licence is also essential, as the role involves site visits and liaison across the district. The ideal candidate will bring a strong mix of technical and behavioural competencies, including programme and project management, knowledge of planning methodologies, legal compliance, research and development, and computer-aided applications. Professional judgement, technical consulting, and report writing are key, as are networking, decision-making, teamwork, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, problem-solving, customer focus, communication, and planning and organising skills. Language proficiency and listening skills are also important for effective engagement with communities, municipalities, and other stakeholders.

The core duties of the post revolve around the application of town and regional planning principles in land development. This includes evaluating and processing land development applications, ensuring compliance with spatial planning legislation, and providing professional advice to decision-makers. The role also encompasses office administration and budget planning, meaning the incumbent will contribute to the efficient management of resources within the district office. Human capital development is another responsibility, which may involve mentoring junior staff, sharing knowledge, and supporting continuous professional development within the team. Research and development form an integral part of the work, enabling evidence-based planning and the continuous improvement of policies and practices.

Candidates should note that this is a multi-district recruitment, and the department requires separate application forms for each district applied for. It is therefore important to indicate the specific district and reference number on the application. The enquiries contact is provided for further questions. These posts offer a meaningful opportunity for qualified professional planners to contribute to spatial transformation and sustainable development in KwaZulu-Natal, while working within a structured public service environment that values professionalism and accountability.
