This position offers an experienced audiologist the opportunity to step into a senior management role within a public regional hospital setting. Based at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, the Assistant Director: Audiology is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the audiology department, ensuring that clinical services are delivered to a high standard while aligning with departmental objectives and broader health policies. The role sits within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health and demands a blend of clinical expertise, administrative capacity, and people management skill. As a deputy-level post, it is graded in accordance with the Occupation Specific Dispensation, meaning the incumbent is expected to function as both a seasoned clinician and a responsible manager.

Candidates must hold a Senior Certificate or equivalent, coupled with a Diploma or Degree in Audiology. Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Audiologist is non-negotiable, as is a minimum of eight years’ experience after registration, at least five of which must be in a management context. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate sound knowledge of clinical and patient management, including the ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients effectively. Strong communication skills, ethical practice, and a working understanding of data verification procedures and budgeting are also essential. This is not an entry-level post; it requires someone who has already honed both clinical judgement and leadership capability in a health services environment.

The duties are wide-ranging and centre on ensuring the smooth functioning of the audiology unit. The Assistant Director will represent the department at various meetings, including cashflow discussions, and will be responsible for the monthly in-service training of audiologists and community service staff. Quality improvement is a major focus: the role involves developing, implementing and supervising quality improvement programmes, as well as creating protocols and guidelines that reflect local and international standards and best practice. The incumbent must also promote continuous professional development within the team, monitor and control departmental expenditure, and conduct employee performance and development assessments. Day-to-day management, administration and supervision of clinical services fall squarely within the remit, alongside ensuring full compliance with health, safety and infection prevention control regulations.

Applicants should note that this is a public service appointment subject to several conditions. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and all appointments are contingent on positive outcomes from security and qualification verifications. There is no provision for travel or subsistence claims for interview attendance, so candidates should be prepared to cover those costs themselves. The closing date, application procedure and all contact details are indicated in the full advertisement, and interested professionals are urged to ensure their application is complete and submitted on time.
