This position offers a specialist-level career opportunity within the Department of Internal Medicine at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, a major tertiary referral centre serving the broader drainage area. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary health care team and will be expected to function at the level of a Medical Specialist, contributing to both clinical service delivery and the academic life of the department. The role is structured across three grades, with appointment and remuneration determined by the number of years of appropriate post-registration experience as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. All grades require a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate, an MBChB or equivalent qualification, and an MMED qualification, along with registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine and current registration in that category. For Grade 1, no prior experience is required, though foreign-qualified candidates must have at least one year of relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA. Grade 2 requires five years of appropriate experience, or six years for foreign candidates, while Grade 3 requires ten years, or eleven years for foreign candidates, in each case after HPCSA registration in the relevant discipline.
The core duties are wide-ranging and reflect the dual clinical and academic nature of the post. The incumbent will provide specialist internal medicine services within the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Department, including after-hours participation in clinical services as operational needs demand. A significant component of the role involves teaching and training: the specialist will participate in the Internal Medicine Registrar Training Programme, contribute to undergraduate medical teaching and assessments, and assist in developing and supporting specialist services across the tertiary drainage area of Grey’s Hospital, including the department’s outreach programme. The post also requires active participation in clinical research and quality control activities within the department. The successful candidate must demonstrate competent general medicine skills appropriate to a specialist, the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, and sound knowledge of public sector and health sector legislation, medical ethics, and financial management. Supervisory skills are essential, as is the willingness to engage in information management, quality assurance, and human resource management. The ability and willingness to provide both undergraduate and postgraduate training are also key requirements.
This is an OSD-graded post with an all-inclusive package structured partly as a flexible portion, and the incumbent will be required to sign a commuted overtime contract annually. Applicants should note that only the new Z83 application form and a detailed curriculum vitae are required at the initial application stage; shortlisted candidates will later need to submit certified documents and certificates of service. Shortlisted candidates will also undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, which will be scored as part of the interview process. The employment equity target for this vacancy is African Male, Coloured Male, African Female, and Coloured Female, and preference will be given in line with this target.
