The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, through its Biodiversity Management directorate, is seeking to fill nineteen Nature Conservation Assistant posts, with successful candidates to be placed across the province's network of nature reserves. This is an entry-level operational role within the broader conservation management framework, supporting the work of resource management staff in maintaining the ecological integrity and physical infrastructure of these protected areas. The position is well suited to individuals who are comfortable working outdoors in sometimes challenging conditions and who have a genuine interest in the practical side of conservation work.
Candidates must hold an NQF level 1 or 2 qualification, which equates to an Abet level 2 or 3 certificate or an equivalent recognised qualification. Beyond the formal educational requirement, the department is looking for individuals with a practical skill set that includes firefighting capability, mechanical aptitude, welding, thatching, electrification, and solid communication skills. While not mandatory, possession of a valid driver's licence and prior knowledge of nature reserve operations will be considered an added advantage, as these directly support the day-to-day demands of the role.
The duties attached to this position are varied and hands-on. The incumbent will be expected to drive official vehicles, maintain infrastructure, vehicles and equipment, and participate in the burning of firebreaks as part of the reserve's fire management strategy. A significant portion of the work involves natural resources management, specifically the control and management of invasive plant species, the erection and repair of fences, and soil erosion control measures. The role also extends to wildlife management activities, including game census counts and regular patrols of the reserve terrain. A basic understanding of the terrain within the nature reserves is therefore essential. Additionally, the position requires availability for resource management weekend duties, which are scheduled on a roster basis to ensure continuous coverage of the reserves.
Shortlisted candidates should be aware that the selection process includes a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, both of which are scored as part of the interview process. Successful applicants will be subjected to a security clearance, including a criminal record check and verification of qualifications. Applications must be submitted using the prescribed Z83 form accompanied by a recently updated CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be required to produce originally certified copies of their qualifications, identity document and driver's licence. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and those who have not been contacted within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity for entry-level candidates to build a career in conservation within the Gauteng provincial reserve system.
