The Liquor Trade Inspector position is a vital role within the Law Enforcement and Compliance directorate of the Gauteng provincial government, based at Umnotho House in Johannesburg. This inspector is responsible for ensuring that all liquor outlets and premises operate in strict accordance with the Gauteng Liquor Act and the specific conditions attached to their granted licenses. The role combines proactive site inspections, reactive complaint investigations, and meticulous documentation to support the Licensing Board in making well-informed regulatory decisions. By verifying that new applicants' premises match their submitted applications and that existing licensees adhere to their trading conditions, the inspector plays a key part in maintaining public safety, reducing alcohol-related harm, and upholding the integrity of the liquor trade across the province.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in law or a Forensic Investigation qualification recognised by SAQA, with an LLB degree considered a distinct advantage. A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience in liquor affairs, as an investigation officer, or in a closely related field is required. Additionally, a valid Code 08 or 10 driver's licence is mandatory, as the role involves frequent travel to various premises across the region. The position is graded at Level 08 and offers a competitive salary with benefits, reflecting the responsibility and specialised nature of the work.

The core duties are multifaceted and demanding. The inspector conducts on-site visits to new applicants' premises, comparing the physical structure and layout against the submitted application to verify compliance with the Liquor Act. This includes ensuring that the applicant's file is up to date and compiling detailed site visit reports with clear recommendations for the Licensing Board. When complaints are received from members of the public or interested parties, the inspector undertakes formal investigations, gathering evidence to substantiate or refute allegations, and compiles comprehensive reports on the findings. If non-compliance is identified, the inspector issues a non-compliance notice under section 116 of the Gauteng Liquor Act, and subsequently conducts follow-up inspections to confirm whether the notice has been addressed. If the notice has not been complied with, the matter is escalated to the Licensing Board with supporting evidence. Additionally, the inspector manages records by compiling and updating inventories, arranging for the transfer of archived records to designated storage facilities, and facilitating the disposal of records upon authorisation from authorised officials.

This position requires strong administrative and report-writing skills, as well as the ability to handle sensitive information and interact professionally with licensees, complainants, and board members. Successful candidates will be subject to a security clearance, including criminal record and qualification verification. All shortlisted candidates will undergo a technical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment as part of the selection process, and these exercises will be scored as additional criteria in the interview. It is important to note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The application process requires a completed Z83 form accompanied by a recently updated CV, and shortlisted candidates must bring originally certified copies of their qualifications, ID, and driver's licence. This is a permanent position within the Gauteng provincial government, offering an excellent opportunity for professionals dedicated to upholding liquor regulations and public safety.
