This position offers two openings for a qualified Artisan Production specialising in welding and electricity, based at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Office of the Free State Department of Education. As an OSD-graded technical role, the incumbent will operate within the department's infrastructure and maintenance environment, ensuring that educational facilities and equipment remain functional, safe, and compliant with national standards. The role is central to the department's ability to maintain its physical assets, supporting the broader educational mandate through reliable technical services.

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 or equivalent qualification, supplemented by an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in Fitter trade, obtained through a completed apprenticeship and successful trade test under the relevant sections of the Manpower Act, 1981, as amended. A valid driver's licence is essential. The ideal applicant will demonstrate sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, computer literacy, excellent time management, strong written and verbal communication, good interpersonal skills for collaboration with colleagues and other departments, and report-writing proficiency. These competencies are vital for operating independently and within a team environment.

The core duties involve producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability limits, then manufacturing objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The artisan will conduct quality assurance on produced items, inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, and repair defects according to prescribed standards. Routine responsibilities include testing and repairing machinery to specification, servicing equipment according to the maintenance plan schedule, and quality-assuring all serviced and maintained equipment. Administrative tasks include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, maintaining job records and registers, and supervising and mentoring staff. Continuous individual development is expected to keep abreast of new technologies and procedures.

The department intends to promote representativity, with preference given to applicants from designated groups, particularly people with disabilities, women, and youth. Applicants should submit a comprehensive CV detailing training, experience, competencies, and employment history, along with three referees. Copies of qualifications are not required at application stage; only shortlisted candidates must provide certified documents. All shortlisted candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal records, citizenship, financial records, and qualification verification, and may need consent for social media access. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, and non-RSA residents must provide proof when shortlisted. New appointments must join the Government Employee Medical Scheme to qualify for a medical subsidy. Candidates should note that if no appointment notification is received within four months of the closing date, their application was unsuccessful. Separate applications are required for each vacancy, and those who terminated services with voluntary severance packages may not apply. The department reserves the right not to fill these positions, and candidates must be available for selection interviews at a date determined by the department.
