This position calls for an experienced and registered professional nurse to take on the role of Assistant Manager Nursing at Katleho District Hospital, functioning within the broader public health service of the Free State. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day delivery of nursing care within the hospital, ensuring that patient care is not only clinically effective but also aligned with the strategic objectives of the department. As a management-level nursing post, the role requires a blend of clinical expertise, leadership capability, and administrative acumen, with the expectation that the incumbent will guide nursing staff, coordinate multi-disciplinary teamwork, and contribute to the continuous improvement of healthcare standards in a district hospital setting.

Candidates must have a Matric certificate and hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing, or a four-year Bachelor of Nursing (R174), or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse in General Nursing. Current registration with the SANC for the 2026/2027 period as a professional nurse is required. A minimum of eight years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration is essential, and at least three of those years must have been at a management level. The role demands strong ability to work under pressure, excellent communication skills, computer literacy, and a thorough knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, as well as nursing statutes and other relevant legislative and policy frameworks.

The core responsibilities include delegating, supervising, and coordinating effective and efficient patient care through adequate nursing care practices. The Assistant Manager Nursing will also initiate and participate in health promotion activities, ensuring that accurate and comprehensive health information is consistently communicated to patients and the community. Building and maintaining constructive working relationships with nursing colleagues and other stakeholders is central to this role, requiring inter-professional, inter-sectoral, and multi-disciplinary teamwork. In addition, the incumbent will participate in the analysis, formulation, and implementation of nursing guidelines, practices, standards, and procedures. Human resource management forms a significant part of the job, alongside monitoring and ensuring the proper utilisation of financial and physical resources.

The department is committed to promoting representativity, and preference will be given to applicants from designated groups, particularly people with disabilities, women, and the youth. Applicants do not need to submit copies of qualifications or other documents at the application stage; only shortlisted candidates will be required to provide certified documents. All shortlisted candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record verification, citizenship verification, financial record checks, and qualification verification, and may also be asked to consent to access to their social media accounts. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). Those who left the public service through voluntary severance packages are not eligible to apply. As a public service post, new appointees must participate in the Government Employee Medical Scheme to qualify for a medical subsidy, and salary progression is dependent on performance assessment. The department reserves the right not to fill the position, and candidates should be available for selection interviews on the dates determined by the department. If no appointment notification is received within four months of the closing date, applicants should assume their application was unsuccessful.
