This is a professional dental post at Itemoheng District Hospital, offering experienced clinicians the opportunity to lead and manage the dental unit while delivering both primary and secondary oral health services. The role is graded at three levels, allowing entry-level, mid-career and senior dentists to apply depending on their years of post-registration experience. The successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical leadership, governance and day-to-day management of the dental unit, ensuring that services are effective, compliant and responsive to patient needs. This includes providing primary and secondary dental care to adults and children, particularly through primary health care clinics and outreach visits that deliver the basic package of oral care. The post also carries responsibility for stock control, infection prevention and control, occupational health and safety, and adherence to Ideal Clinic Standards, so a methodical and quality-focused approach is essential.
Applicants must hold a matric certificate and an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a dentist. Current registration with the HPCSA for the 2026/2027 period is required, along with a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence. Experience requirements are structured by grade: no post-registration experience is needed for Grade 1, while Grade 2 requires a minimum of seven years and Grade 3 requires a minimum of twelve years of appropriate experience as a dentist after registration. The ideal candidate will be skilled in clinical documentation, report writing, record keeping and referral writing, and will have sound verbal and written communication skills. Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is expected, as is the ability to do clinical planning, manage time well, and adapt flexibly to differing client needs.
The department places a strong emphasis on representativity. Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups, especially people with disabilities, women and youth. Applications must be submitted with a detailed CV that includes a complete chronological record of training, experience, competencies and employment history, plus the names and telephone numbers of three referees. There is no need to submit copies of qualifications at application stage; only shortlisted candidates will be asked for certified documents. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial records, qualification verification, and may be asked for consent to access their social media accounts. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, and non-RSA residents will need to provide proof of permanent residence if shortlisted. New appointees will be required to join the Government Employee Medical Scheme to qualify for a government medical subsidy. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and applicants who do not hear anything within four months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity for a committed dentist to make a meaningful contribution to public oral health services in the Free State.
