This vacancy is for a Chief Assistant Technical Officer (Scientific Support) within the Department of Water and Sanitation, specifically based at the Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria and falling under the Water Resources Management branch, within the Resource Quality Information sub-directorate. The role is central to supporting the department’s water quality monitoring and information management functions by ensuring that reliable data is extracted and shared with both internal and external stakeholders. As a scientific support position, it sits within a technical career path and is graded at an OSD level, reflecting the specialised nature of the work and the experience required to perform it effectively.

Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12 with Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, or Physical Science as passed subjects. In addition, the role requires between six and ten years of practical experience in water-related data collection, data processing, or a laboratory environment. This experience should be underpinned by a working knowledge of data administration, water quality processes and systems, as well as familiarity with laboratory and monitoring equipment. Computer literacy is essential, as is a valid driver’s licence, since the work may involve travel or fieldwork-related activities. Strong problem-solving skills are also required, as the post involves interpreting and clarifying data requests that may be incomplete or ambiguous.

The core duties revolve around the Water Management System, which is the department’s central repository for water quality and monitoring information. The successful candidate will be responsible for extracting and compiling data from this system by applying sound business knowledge and system expertise. This includes interpreting data requests to ensure that retrieval is accurate and aligned with monitoring requirements, as well as coordinating and conducting searches related to monitoring points, variables, datasets, and associated information in consultation with relevant colleagues. The role also involves liaising with internal and external clients to troubleshoot issues and clarify unclear or incomplete data requests. A key responsibility is ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all data supplied, while maintaining proper records of data requests and outputs to support traceability and accountability.

The department is an equal opportunity employer, and applications from women and persons with disabilities are particularly encouraged, with preference given to candidates in line with Employment Equity targets. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to suitability checks, including qualification verification through SAQA, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate if shortlisted. Applicants should note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the post. This position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s water resource management through accurate scientific data support.
