The Department is seeking a committed, high-calibre professional to fill the role of Assistant Director: Industry Research, based at Head Office in Pretoria. This position sits within the Industry Research directorate and is central to the unit’s mandate of providing evidence-based insights and practical tools to stakeholders across the organisation. The successful candidate will conduct independent research into financial, economic, social, and property-related trends, perform detailed data analytics, and assist in the development of analytical models and dashboards. A key feature of the role is the application of property and financial mathematics principles to determine user charges and property rental amounts, ensuring that the department’s financial decisions are grounded in sound quantitative analysis. By compiling research reports and translating complex data into actionable business intelligence, the incumbent will enable more efficient and effective decision-making across the Department.

Applicants must hold at least a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF Level 06 or a National Diploma in the Built Environment, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or an equivalent field. In addition, relevant work experience in a financial, data analytics, economic, or property research environment is required. The post demands strong competence in Microsoft Office applications, particularly advanced skills in MS Excel, alongside a solid understanding of data analytics software and the development of analytical tools or models. A working knowledge of financial and investment management principles, as well as a strong grasp of financial mathematics, is essential. The role also requires sound project and people management capabilities, since the incumbent will collaborate with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to validate analyses and outputs, and will provide technical assistance to other business units. Candidates should therefore be able to communicate and present findings effectively to non-specialist audiences.

On a personal level, the ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills, and must demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and independently. Dedication, diligence, and a focused approach are critical, as is a genuine passion for knowledge and research. The Department values innovative thinking, initiative, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in every aspect of work. Core duties will include researching and analysing trends independently, performing data analysis and documenting insights, preparing business reports, calculating property rent and user charges, and contributing to the development of investment-related policies and analytical tools.

This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity within the Public Service and offers the successful candidate a chance to make a tangible impact on government decision-making. As with all public service positions, shortlisted candidates must be willing to undergo standard vetting and verification processes. It is also the responsibility of applicants to ensure that any foreign qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Given the high volume of applications typically received, correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and those who have not been contacted within three months of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful. Applicants should pay careful attention to the prescribed application requirements, including the completion of the official application form, as failure to comply may result in disqualification. The position is well suited to an individual who is analytical, proactive, and passionate about using research to drive sound financial and policy decisions.
