The National Prosecutions Service (NPA) is seeking a Court Preparation Officer to join the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in Bloemfontein, within the broader framework of the criminal justice system. This role is central to the NPA’s commitment to victim-centred justice, focusing on the care and support of victims of crime, witnesses, and court customers. The position is graded at an OSD level and forms part of the support structure that enables prosecutors to function effectively by ensuring that those who must testify are emotionally and practically prepared for the court process. The officer works within the court environment and reports directly to the Prosecutor or Manager, operating as a key link between the witness and the legal process.

To be considered for this position, applicants must hold an appropriate Bachelor's degree at NQF level 7 or a three-year diploma at NQF level 6 in Social Science, Behavioural Studies, or an equivalent qualification. At least one year of working experience is required, which may include experience gained during practical training. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to act independently, professionally, and with credibility, alongside sound coordination and counselling experience. A genuine ability to work well with children is essential, as is a solid knowledge of the Criminal Justice System. Strong administrative skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are also non-negotiable for this role.

The core duties of the Court Preparation Officer involve providing holistic and integrated care for victims, customers, and witnesses within the court setting. A primary responsibility is preventing secondary traumatisation by creating a safe and secure environment in which witnesses, particularly children, can testify without further distress. The officer implements court preparation programmes for both child and adult victims and witnesses, and performs all related tasks in line with generally accepted court preparation techniques. This includes liaising with prosecutors and managers, reporting on progress, and ensuring that every witness is adequately prepared for what they will encounter in the courtroom.

Applicants should note that the NPA is an equal opportunity employer and that appointment is subject to a security clearance of at least confidential level, with fingerprints taken on the day of the interview. Shortlisted candidates may have their social media accounts accessed as part of the verification process, and all shortlisted applicants will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, and only the most recent Z83 application form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV, will be accepted. The NPA does not pay resettlement costs for successful candidates.
