This permanent Handyman position is based at the Temba Campus of Tshwane North TVET College, operating within the college’s facilities and maintenance unit. The role is central to ensuring that the campus remains safe, functional, and presentable on a daily basis, with a strong emphasis on round-the-clock availability. The successful candidate will be expected to live on or remain consistently present at the college premises, serving as a first-line responder to maintenance issues, security concerns, and any on-site risks or threats that may arise. This is a hands-on operational role that requires a self-driven individual who can work independently while also coordinating effectively with security personnel and reporting to a supervisor.
Applicants must possess basic knowledge and practical experience in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and air conditioning maintenance, along with the ability to perform routine repairs and upkeep tasks without constant supervision. Experience in managing and securing access through effective key control is essential, as is the capacity to supervise and coordinate with on-site security staff. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory. Strong troubleshooting skills, good verbal and written communication, and the ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress or urgent situations are all required. Experience in gardening, landscaping, or cleaning will be considered an advantage, as will a willingness to work extra hours, including weekends and during special college events.
The duties are wide-ranging and include conducting regular inspections of buildings, fencing, doors, and other structural elements, promptly identifying and reporting maintenance needs, and performing general maintenance such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and minor repairs. The handyman is responsible for unlocking offices, classrooms, workshops, and laboratories at designated times and securing all windows, doors, air conditioners, gas heaters, and gates after use. Safekeeping, distribution, and allocation of all campus keys fall under this role, as do basic repairs to broken windows, doors, leaks, ceilings, and ablution facilities. The position also involves assisting with cleaning when necessary, performing gardening and landscaping tasks, reviewing the Security Occurrence Book daily, identifying and reporting risks to management without delay, and completing daily, weekly, and monthly reports on campus conditions. Additional duties may be delegated by the supervisor, and the candidate must remain flexible and willing to undergo continuous training and development, as well as attend and run meetings.
This is an OSD-graded post, and the college has set specific employment equity targets for this vacancy, with people with disabilities encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a vetting process covering criminal records, citizenship, credit records, and qualifications, and will be required to complete both a practical exercise and an integrity assessment as part of the selection process. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
