This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced ICT professional to take on a leadership role within a public technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college in the Free State province. As the Assistant Director for Information Technology at the college’s Central Office, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire technology ecosystem that supports the institution’s academic and administrative functions. The role sits within a dynamic educational environment, requiring a blend of technical expertise, strategic planning, and people management. The incumbent will report to senior management and will be expected to align ICT operations with the broader goals of the college, while ensuring compliance with the legislative and regulatory frameworks governing both the TVET sector and the public service.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12, or an NCV Level 4 qualification, alongside a recognised three-year National Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closely related field. A minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience in an IT environment is required, with at least three of those years spent in a supervisory capacity. A valid driver’s licence and computer literacy are essential. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough understanding of TVET sector regulations, corporate ICT principles, and relevant legislation, as well as strong skills in administration, project management, financial management, problem-solving, report writing, and team leadership. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities are also critical, as the role involves liaising with staff, students, and external vendors.

The core duties of this position are multifaceted. The Assistant Director will be responsible for developing, reviewing, and monitoring the implementation of ICT policies, including conducting research on provincial and national frameworks, organising workshops to raise awareness, and establishing risk management processes. In terms of information systems, the role involves administering IT security, controlling electronic access, safeguarding hardware and data, and performing regular system backups. Network management is another key area, encompassing the research, specification, procurement, and maintenance of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies, as well as setting up and troubleshooting email, internet, and intranet connections across the college. The position also entails managing ICT software and hardware, from developing procurement plans and advising on purchases to distributing equipment, monitoring performance, reporting on redundant systems, and ensuring all software licences are valid and appropriate. Additionally, the role includes overseeing the college’s intranet and website, ensuring content is current and accessible. Finally, the Assistant Director is responsible for managing the human, financial, and other resources of the IT unit, which includes supervising staff, budgeting, and ensuring efficient operations.

This is a permanent, level 09 position with associated benefits. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a vetting process, including criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification, as well as two pre-entry assessments covering practical skills and ethical conduct. Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups, particularly with regard to race, gender, and disability, in line with the college’s equal opportunity employment policy. Applicants should note that all costs related to the application and interviews are for their own account, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
