The Assistant Director: Student Support Services is a key management position within the Central Johannesburg TVET College, based at the Central Office. This is a re-advertisement, and candidates who applied previously and remain interested are strongly encouraged to submit fresh applications. The post is graded at Level 10 and forms part of the college’s broader student support leadership, focusing on the well-being, development, and overall student experience across the institution. As a senior role, it requires a strategic yet hands-on approach to managing support services that directly impact student success, retention, and holistic growth within the post-school education and training environment.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7 in Psychology, or a BA in Social Work with Psychology as a major, or an equivalent qualification. A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience in an educational institution is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. Strong computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is essential, as is a thorough working knowledge of the PSET and CET Acts, Teaching and Learning policies, the Skills Development Act, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and related legislation, the Public Service Regulations and Public Service Act, and the Labour Relations Act. Candidates must also demonstrate familiarity with the ethical, regulatory, and legislative frameworks that govern student support services. The role demands a wide range of competencies, including administrative and organisational ability, financial management and planning, report writing, communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving, client orientation, analytical thinking, project management, team leadership, and people management. Excellent report writing and processing skills are also essential.
The core duties of this position are multifaceted. The successful candidate will oversee the administration of the student support services unit, ensuring efficient operations and alignment with college policies. This includes managing student counselling services across all campuses, providing career guidance, academic support, and personal counselling to students. The role also involves overseeing and maintaining sport, recreation, and arts and culture activities, which are vital to fostering a vibrant campus life. Furthermore, the incumbent will facilitate student governance and leadership development, helping to build a strong student representative structure. Another important responsibility is managing the mainstreaming of gender equality and disability inclusion within all student services. The post also carries overall accountability for the human, financial, and other resources of the unit, requiring sound financial planning and the ability to lead and develop a team effectively.
The college is committed to Employment Equity and affirmative action, and preference will be given to candidates whose appointment promotes representativity in terms of race, gender, and disability, in line with the Departmental Employment Equity Policy and applicable equity targets. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing both technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment. These assessments will be scored as part of the interview process. Shortlisted applicants must also submit certified copies of qualifications and a service letter confirming previous employment history prior to the interview. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) at the applicant’s own expense. The successful candidate will be expected to sign an annual performance agreement, disclose financial interests, and undergo security clearance as well as personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, qualification, and employment verification. Due to college financial constraints, candidates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements during the recruitment process. The college reserves the right not to make an appointment, and candidates who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
