The Artisan (Production): Equipment Maintenance Mechanical position is a crucial technical role based in Pretoria, within the Government Printing Works (GPW), the state's primary producer of security documents and printed matter. This is an OSD-graded position, reflecting a structured career path for qualified artisans. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the operational integrity and reliability of all mechanical equipment across GPW sites, directly supporting the organisation's core manufacturing and production mandates. This role is not merely reactive; it demands a proactive approach to scheduled maintenance, adherence to strict timelines, and a deep commitment to safety and quality standards within a high-stakes production environment.
To be considered for this role, applicants must possess a Grade 10 or equivalent qualification, coupled with a completed apprenticeship and a Trade Test Certificate in the Printing Industry. While no prior experience is required, a Grade 12 certificate and experience within the printing sector will be advantageous. The role requires a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a positive security clearance, which is a non-negotiable requirement given the sensitive nature of GPW's work. A successful candidate will demonstrate a sound understanding of applicable processes and equipment, as well as knowledge of key legislative frameworks including the Public Service Act, Labour Relations Act, and the Skills Development Act. A thorough understanding of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management requirements, alongside all relevant safety protocols for a manufacturing environment, is essential.
The core duties are multifaceted, centering on the execution of efficient maintenance and repair. This includes adhering to a pre-established maintenance schedule to build an accurate equipment history, completing maintenance work orders, and escalating any operations that could delay production or pose a health and safety risk. The artisan will assist in performing root cause analyses on equipment breakdowns and will be responsible for inspecting all mechanical equipment according to manufacturer instructions, reporting any signs of damage to a supervisor immediately. A significant portion of the role involves work order management, which entails collecting daily assignments, engaging with requestors and supervisors, and ensuring all work orders are fully completed and reported back. Administrative functions are also integral, including submitting written and verbal reports, managing leave and time attendance, and attending both standing and ad-hoc meetings and training interventions. Finally, the role demands unwavering adherence to health and safety prescripts, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and conducting regular risk assessments to eliminate injuries to operators and other staff. This position is ideal for a disciplined, safety-conscious artisan ready to contribute to a vital national institution.
