This position offers an opportunity for a qualified electrician to join the Government Printing Works (GPW) in Pretoria as an Artisan (Production) within the Electrical Services Maintenance division. Operating under an OSD-graded salary structure, the role is central to ensuring that all electrical equipment across GPW sites remains fully operational, safe, and compliant with both internal standards and national regulations. As a production artisan, you will be responsible for the hands-on maintenance, repair, and inspection of a wide range of electrical machinery and systems used in the printing and production environment. The work is scheduled and systematic, requiring strict adherence to established maintenance sequences and lead times, while also being responsive to urgent faults that could halt production or create safety hazards. You will work closely with supervisors, machine operators, and original equipment manufacturers, and your ability to document every action through work orders is essential for building an accurate maintenance history and ensuring accountability.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 10 certificate or an equivalent qualification, along with a completed apprenticeship and a Trade Test Certificate in Electrical. While no prior work experience is required, a Grade 12 qualification and any experience within the printing industry will be viewed as distinct advantages. The role demands a solid understanding of applicable processes and equipment, as well as familiarity with key legislative frameworks including the Public Service Act, Public Service Regulations, Labour Relations Act, and the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management requirements. Knowledge of the PFMA and Treasury Regulations is also expected, and a valid driver’s licence is mandatory. Importantly, you must be able to obtain a positive security clearance, as the position operates within a government security-sensitive environment.

Your daily duties will encompass a broad spectrum of responsibilities. You will receive work orders from your supervisor each morning and prioritise jobs accordingly, engaging with the relevant requestor or artisan to diagnose faults. After completing repairs, you will fill out work orders fully, close them out, or escalate unresolved issues to agents or OEMs through your supervisor. You will also perform routine inspections of all electrical equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and agreed timelines, immediately reporting any signs of damage or shortcomings. Quality assurance is a key part of the role: you will review factors that could affect the quality of maintenance work, implement corrective measures, and monitor progress to identify early warning signs. Administrative duties include submitting written and verbal reports, managing your own leave and attendance, and attending training sessions, workshops, and meetings as required. Throughout all activities, you must adhere strictly to health and safety prescripts, use personal protective equipment correctly, and conduct regular risk assessments to prevent injuries to yourself, operators, and anyone near the machinery.

This is a permanent government position with a closing date well in the future, but interested candidates should note that the application process is strict. You will need to submit a completed Z83 form and a CV combined into a single PDF attachment, with the correct job title and reference number in the subject line. Only shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide certified copies of qualifications. The department promotes equity and encourages applications from designated groups, and all appointments are subject to security clearance and reference checks. If you are a disciplined, safety-conscious electrician looking to build a career in a stable public sector environment, this role offers a solid foundation.
