This is an OSD-graded Artisan Production Grade A position within the Government Printing Works in Pretoria, with nine posts available. The role sits within the finishing operations of both commercial printing, such as stationery, and security printing, such as examination materials. As an artisan, you will be responsible for setting up, operating and managing a range of production equipment used in cutting, folding, binding, packaging and other finishing activities. The work must be carried out in line with GPW procedures, customer specifications and production schedules, so attention to detail and adherence to standards are essential. You will also monitor production performance, optimise processes, reduce waste and support the achievement of production targets while maintaining the required quality levels. Reporting is a key part of the role, with all reports and related matters to be submitted to the supervisor.
To qualify, you need a Grade 10 certificate or an equivalent qualification, together with a completed apprenticeship and a Trade Test Certificate in Mechanised Bookbinding, Craft Bookbinding or Packaging. No prior work experience is required, making this an entry-level artisan opportunity. However, a Grade 12 qualification, computer literacy, experience in the printing industry and a valid driver’s licence will all be considered added advantages. You must also be able to obtain a positive security clearance, which is a necessary condition for employment given the sensitive nature of some of the printing work undertaken by the department.
The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and it intends to promote equity in terms of race, gender and disability through the filling of these posts. Suitable candidates will be subjected to a personnel suitability check, which includes verification of criminal records, citizenship, credit records, qualifications and employment history. By applying, you consent to the collection, processing and storage of your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, and your information will only be used for this recruitment process. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment. Applicants should note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if you have not heard anything within eight weeks after the closing date, you should assume your application was unsuccessful. The application process itself requires strict adherence to the instructions, including the use of the new Z83 application form and the submission of a combined CV and application form as a single PDF attachment, with the correct job title and reference number indicated.
