This position is for an Artisan Foreman Grade A specialising in rubber stamp making, located within the Security Printing directorate of the organisation, based in Pretoria. The role is an OSD-graded post and forms part of a production-oriented environment where precision, quality control and team supervision are central to daily operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire rubber stamp manufacturing process, from initial client consultation and design development through to the final packaging and dispatch of finished products. This is a supervisory artisan role that combines hands-on technical work with team leadership, equipment maintenance, and compliance with safety and quality standards.
To be considered for this vacancy, applicants must have completed an apprenticeship and hold a Trade Test Certificate in Electronic Origination, along with a Grade 10 or equivalent qualification. Grade 12 will be an added advantage, as will knowledge and experience in CorelDraw and Microsoft Excel. Applicants need at least five years of appropriate post-apprenticeship experience, and must be able to obtain a positive security clearance, which is a key requirement given the nature of the work within a security printing environment. A valid driver’s licence is also listed as an added advantage.
The core duties of the role involve designing rubber stamps, operating stamp-making equipment, and overseeing the manufacturing process to ensure effective and efficient production output. The foreman will confirm client or internal requirements and specifications to guarantee that stamps are accurate and fit for purpose. This includes developing, reviewing and amending designs using appropriate design software or approved manual methods, as well as preparing text, graphics and artwork for exposure onto polymer or rubber plates. Supervision is a major component, with responsibility for allocating work, monitoring team performance, providing feedback, and supporting the training, coaching and development of staff. The role also requires continuous monitoring of equipment performance, coordinating repairs with maintenance personnel, and performing routine maintenance in line with manufacturer requirements. Quality assurance is another key area, with the foreman expected to implement and monitor processes to ensure that finished rubber stamps meet required standards, are correctly labelled and packaged, and are ready for dispatch. In addition, the position involves recommending process improvements to reduce waste and enhance quality and efficiency, maintaining accurate records of cleaning, maintenance and repairs, and actively participating in SHERQ initiatives. This includes supporting safety inspections, awareness activities, corrective and preventative actions, and broader continuous improvement efforts within the section.
Other notable information relates to the application conditions and selection process. Applicants must ensure they use the correct application form and follow the submission instructions exactly, as failure to do so will result in disqualification. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other documents, and all suitable candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no feedback is received within eight weeks after the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. This is a demanding technical supervisory position that requires a blend of artisan skill, design capability, and managerial awareness to maintain smooth, safe and high-quality production within a security-conscious government printing environment.
