This position is for an Artisan Chief Grade A within the Production division of the Government Printing Works (GPW) in Pretoria, a critical state entity responsible for producing government documents and security printing. The role is a senior supervisory and technical post, graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), and there are two vacancies available. The successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of production planning and coordination, ensuring that all finishing, binding, and packaging operations meet strict quality, output, and turnaround targets. This is not a hands-on-only role; it is a management position that requires balancing technical expertise with administrative oversight, staff supervision, and strict adherence to security protocols given the sensitive nature of the work.
Candidates must possess a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent, coupled with a completed apprenticeship in Craft Bookbinding, Mechanised Bookbinding, or Packaging, and hold the appropriate Printing Trade Test Certificate. A Grade 12 qualification and computer literacy are advantageous. The role demands a minimum of ten years of post-apprenticeship experience in the printing industry, with at least five years specifically in the relevant binding or packaging fields and a minimum of three years in a proven supervisory capacity. A valid driver’s licence is an added advantage, and the ability to obtain a positive security clearance is mandatory. The ideal applicant will have specialised, in-depth knowledge of binding, packaging, and finishing processes and the associated equipment.
The core duties are extensive and centre on overseeing both automated and manual processes, including examination packaging, hard-cover binding, thread-sewn books, book-cover printing, collating, numbering, pasting, drilling, and stapling. The Artisan Chief must control wastage, protect confidential and security products, and verify production quantities. A significant part of the role involves monitoring quality, investigating defects, and implementing corrective actions to ensure compliance with ISO standards. The position also requires maintaining production records, analysing productivity trends, preparing reports, and approving completed batches for dispatch. Ensuring all equipment is cleaned, calibrated, and maintained through preventative maintenance and liaison with Engineering support is a key responsibility.
Furthermore, the role carries full accountability for managing SHERQ and OHSA compliance, conducting risk assessments and incident investigations, and enforcing the use of PPE. As a supervisor, the incumbent will allocate work, monitor performance, manage attendance and discipline, and conduct performance reviews. A key function is the training and development of learners, artisans, and printer assistants. The role also involves developing policies, strategies, and Standard Operating Procedures to drive continuous improvement and ensure efficient production flow. The successful candidate will be expected to stay abreast of new developments in the field. This is a demanding role suited to a seasoned professional who can manage people, processes, and security simultaneously. The department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from designated groups to meet its equity targets.
