This is a casual worker position within the Research Services directorate of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), offered on a twelve-month contract basis. Based in Pretoria, the role is designed to provide essential administrative and logistical support to the directorate’s research functions. The successful candidate will assist with a range of directorate administrative duties, help coordinate fieldwork logistics, and source reports and articles that are relevant to the directorate’s ongoing work. This is an entry-level opportunity that requires no prior work experience, making it suitable for individuals who have recently completed their schooling and are looking to gain practical exposure within a government communication and research environment.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 or National Senior Certificate at NQF level 4, as recognised by SAQA. While no experience is required, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate a range of personal and technical competencies. These include the ability to work independently without close supervision, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and perform well under pressure. The role demands a self-driven, creative, innovative, flexible and highly motivated individual who can take initiative and pay close attention to detail. Strong coordination skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and a client service orientation are also essential. In addition, candidates should be proficient in Microsoft packages, specifically MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook.

The main duties of the post revolve around supporting the smooth operation of the Research Services directorate. This includes handling administrative tasks, organising and assisting with fieldwork logistics, and identifying and sourcing relevant reports and articles that inform the directorate’s research outputs. The ability to prioritise and work accurately in a busy environment will be important, as will a proactive approach to problem-solving.

The department encourages applicants with disabilities to apply. It is important to note that all applications must be submitted on the new prescribed Z83 form, as the old form was withdrawn; failure to use the correct form will lead to disqualification. Applicants do not need to submit copies of qualifications or other documents at the application stage, but must provide a fully completed and signed Z83 form along with a detailed CV. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of their documents before or on the day of the interview. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Late applications will not be considered, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates; if no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.

The successful candidate will be required to disclose registrable financial interests to the Director-General, sign a performance agreement and employment contract within three months of starting, and obtain a top-secret security clearance. All appointments are subject to verification of qualifications, experience, citizenship, reference checks and security vetting. Shortlisted candidates will also undergo a pre-entry practical exercise as part of the assessment process, with the results contributing to the interview scoring. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in line with POPIA. The department reserves the right not to fill the post.
