This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning of a Western Cape Government department as an Administrative Clerk, based in Cape Town. Operating within a structured public service environment, the role is centred on providing reliable, day-to-day administrative support that keeps office operations running efficiently. The successful candidate will become part of a team that values professionalism, accountability and credibility, and will be expected to work independently while also collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders. The role is particularly suited to individuals who are organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic setting.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 Senior Certificate, an NCV Level 4 qualification, or an equivalent qualification recognised at NQF level 4 by SAQA. While not compulsory, completing relevant courses in the administrative field will be considered an added advantage. Candidates should also possess solid computer literacy, particularly in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Office, MS PowerPoint and Outlook. Beyond technical skills, the role demands sound planning and organising abilities, strong problem-solving capacity, and excellent verbal and written communication. Interpersonal skills are essential, as is a customer-focused approach and the readiness to respond promptly to service requests. The ability to work under pressure is a key requirement, given the pace and volume of administrative tasks within the department.
The duties are broad and touch on several core administrative functions. The incumbent will manage both incoming and outgoing correspondence, ensuring that documents are accurately recorded, routed and tracked. They will also provide administrative support for logistics and the vehicle fleet, maintain leave records, and prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly returns. Another important responsibility involves supporting inspections of buildings, premises and properties, which requires coordination and careful record-keeping. In addition, the role includes maintaining databases, filing systems and registers, while protecting the integrity of these records to prevent unauthorised access. This aspect of the job is vital to ensuring confidentiality and compliance with departmental protocols.
Candidates should be aware of certain conditions attached to the post. It is expected that those selected for interviews will be available on a date, time and place determined by the department. In line with departmental policy, excess personnel will receive preference during the selection process. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and another that assesses integrity and ethical conduct. The results of both exercises will be scored as an additional criterion during the interview process, so preparation and a clear understanding of the role’s demands are advisable. This vacancy is part of the broader public service recruitment cycle, reflecting the department’s commitment to filling essential support positions with competent and ethical individuals.
