This position is for an Artisan Assistant specialising in electrical work, based at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. The role sits within the hospital’s technical or engineering support team, where the primary purpose is to provide hands-on assistance to qualified artisans in maintaining the hospital’s physical infrastructure. As a large tertiary healthcare facility, Groote Schuur relies on functioning plant rooms, medical equipment, and safe buildings, and this post plays a key supporting role in keeping all of those operational. The job will appeal to someone who is practically minded, comfortable working within a team, and committed to the safety and hygiene standards expected in a hospital environment.

To be considered, applicants must have at least a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification. More importantly, the role requires appropriate experience in general electrical work, meaning candidates need to demonstrate that they have already worked with electrical systems or components in a hands-on capacity. The job also demands an inherent willingness to perform overtime duty when required, as hospital maintenance needs do not always fall within standard working hours. In terms of competencies, the ideal candidate can work well under pressure, has a basic understanding of both electrical and mechanical engineering principles, and communicates effectively with colleagues and other hospital staff. A strong commitment to the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 and its relevant regulations is also essential, since working in a hospital means that safety protocols must never be bypassed.

The main duties are varied and practical. The successful candidate will assist artisans with maintenance, repairs, and installation projects across the hospital’s plant, equipment, and buildings. This includes helping to service and fix electrical systems, ensuring that plant rooms and equipment are kept clean and safe, and maintaining the general work area to an acceptable standard. Administrative accountability also forms part of the role: the assistant must complete and return repair requisitions and keep accurate records of all repairs undertaken. In addition, the post involves assisting with the ordering and control of workshop materials and tools, making sure that the team has the right supplies and that tools are properly managed. Another significant responsibility is to train and develop staff, meaning the post holder may help onboard or upskill less experienced colleagues or learners within the workshop. Finally, after any repair or installation work, the assistant is expected to clean the area where work has been carried out, leaving it fit for purpose in a clinical environment.

This is an entry-level artisan support post within the public health sector, offering a stable salary and the opportunity to grow within a government hospital environment. Given the nature of the work, applicants should be physically capable and flexible in their working hours. It is also worth noting that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, as with all legitimate provincial government positions. Queries can be directed to the named contact person for the circular, but otherwise candidates should prepare to submit their application through the prescribed channel before the closing date. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in maintaining essential services in one of South Africa’s foremost public hospitals.
