This position offers an excellent opportunity for a qualified boiler operator to join the engineering and maintenance team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. As one of three boiler operators, the successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the hospital’s boiler house, which is critical to the daily functioning of this major healthcare facility. Working within the broader infrastructure and technical services unit, the role supports the hospital’s heating, sterilisation, and hot water systems by ensuring that coal-fired steam boilers operate reliably and in line with demand. The position is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and involves shift work, standby duties, and occasional overtime, reflecting the essential nature of the service provided around the clock.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold at least a Grade 10 certificate along with a recognised, valid National Steam Certificate. In addition, the role requires proven, appropriate experience working on large industrial boilers, together with an accredited qualification specifically in the operation of coal-fired steam boilers. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate sound technical knowledge and practical skill, as well as the ability to plan ahead proactively, work independently, and function collaboratively as part of a team. A firm commitment to learning and complying with in-house systems and procedures is essential, as is a strict adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related occupational health standards. The working environment can be demanding, so the ideal applicant will be someone who performs well under pressure and is willing to work shifts, including nights and weekends, whenever required.

The core duties of the post are practical and hands-on. The boiler operator will assist the Artisan-Foreman with routine maintenance and repairs, ensuring that all equipment remains in good working order. Monitoring duties include checking boiler pressure to match current steam demand and regularly assessing the water and fuel levels to maintain safe and efficient combustion. The operator is also responsible for ensuring the correct usage and flow of chemicals used in the boiler system, preventing scale, corrosion, and other water-related issues. Administrative functions form part of the role as well, meaning the candidate must be capable of accurately maintaining logs, records, and other operational documentation. Throughout all activities, compliance with occupational health standards and the Occupational Health and Safety Act is non-negotiable.

This is a permanent post based at a prominent public hospital, offering a stable career within the Western Cape Department of Health. Applicants should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The selection process may verify qualifications and experience, and it is important to meet all inherent requirements from the outset. Given the hospital’s operational needs, the successful candidates must be available for standby, nightshift, and overtime duties as rostered. Enquiries can be directed to the contact person listed in the vacancy notice, while applications must be submitted online through the provincial health jobs portal. This role is ideal for a dedicated boiler operator who thrives in a service-critical environment and wishes to contribute to the smooth functioning of a major healthcare institution.
