This administrative clerk position sits within the People Management Practices and Planning component at the Western Cape Government’s Department of Health, based at Head Office in Cape Town. The role supports the functioning of the component specifically in the areas of wellness, diversity and disability. The incumbent will be part of a team responsible for enabling the department to manage its human resources practices and planning initiatives. As such, the clerk provides essential administrative and logistical support across a range of activities, from arranging meetings and workshops to handling procurement and financial administration tasks. The post requires an individual who is organised, proactive and able to work with various internal and external stakeholders.
To be considered, applicants must have a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification and appropriate experience in an administrative or support environment. The role also demands an inherent ability and willingness to travel throughout the Western Cape province, since events, workshops and exhibitions may occur at different locations. Competencies required include computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email; effective communication in a professional setting; strong planning and organisational skills; and innovative problem-solving abilities. Additionally, the successful candidate should demonstrate sound interpersonal skills, numeracy for handling petty cash and budgets, and analytical skills for compiling statistics and researching topics relevant to the component’s work.
The duties are varied. The clerk will make logistical arrangements for meetings and workshops, including booking venues, arranging government transport, organising catering, and preparing documents and other materials. The role also involves assisting with research, report writing and the compilation and updating of statistics related to the component’s activities. Financial and administrative tasks include budgetary control, managing petty cash, processing travel and subsistence claims, and helping to prepare special projects and events. The clerk is also expected to set up and dismantle exhibition equipment for the component’s events or programmes. General office administration forms a significant part of the job: answering telephones, typing, record keeping, distributing and tracking documents, and handling the procurement of all requirements for the component. Furthermore, the clerk will draft minutes of meetings and circulate them for consultation with both internal and external stakeholders.
This is an administrative post in the provincial government, based in Cape Town, with a salary as advertised. As with all public service positions, no payment of any kind is required when applying. Candidates who match the required qualifications and experience and who have a keen interest in promoting wellness, diversity and disability inclusion within the public health sector are encouraged to apply via the official online application system before the closing date. Appointments are subject to standard government employment checks and terms. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to the effective management of people practices in a large provincial department, while gaining experience across logistics, finance, secretariat support and stakeholder engagement.
